The Complete Guide to Wood Chatter When Sanding

Quick answer: Chatter marks are usually blamed on the sanding belt splice, but most of the time the real cause is the machine – a worn or out-of-round contact drum, bad bearings, loose drive belts, or vibration. Two quick tests tell you which: mark the belt splice with chalk and see if the marks line up with it, and sand two boards at different conveyor speeds – if the spacing of the marks changes, it's the belt; if it doesn't, it's the drum. Fix with fresh contact-drum bearings, a balanced drum, a 60-durometer roller, a platen for finish passes, and a slower feed.

What causes chatter when sanding wood?

Chatter is a regular, repeating pattern of marks across the board. On a wide belt or drum sander it comes from one of two places: the belt, or the machine.

The belt. The splice (the joint) is slightly thicker than the rest of the belt, so the extra abrasive at the joint digs deeper into the wood on every revolution. A quick way to confirm: mark the splice with chalk or a black crayon, run a clean board through, and look. If the chalk lands on top of the chatter marks, the splice is your problem.

The machine. A worn contact drum bearing, worn drive-motor or idler-roll bearings, loose or worn drive belts, flat spots on the drum, an out-of-balance drum or idler, or a conveyor that isn't feeding at a constant rate. It's a long list, and in our experience old machines are the true culprit far more often than the belt – it's the contact roller's job to absorb the splice thickness, and a healthy roller does.

How to tell whether it's the belt or the drum

  1. Chalk test. Mark the splice, sand a clean board, and check whether the marks coincide with the chalk.
  2. Speed test. Sand one board at a fast conveyor speed and one at a slow speed, then compare. If the spacing of the marks is the same on both, the chatter is coming from the drum. If the spacing changes with speed, it's the belt splice – because a splice runs diagonally across the belt while a roller defect runs straight across.
  3. Look at the pattern. Uniform marks spread across the whole board usually mean the rollers are out of balance or the bearings are worn and the roller has gone slightly oval.
  4. Check the mounting. Loose foundation plates and poor mounting cause vibration. Tightening them is an easy fix.

How to fix chatter

  • Tighten the drive belts.
  • Balance the contact drum.
  • Check the conveyor belt and drive belt for smoothness and wear.
  • Replace the contact-drum bearings – cheap, easy, and the single most common fix.

How to prevent chatter

Maintain the machine. We have our own machines inspected and serviced monthly, and the shops that never do are the ones paying for expensive repairs and consultants later. Beyond that, three quick habits:

  1. Use a platen for finish passes. A platen sands less per pass over a wider area than the contact roller. A few finishing passes with the platen engaged give an unbeatable smooth surface.
  2. Slow and steady. Turn the conveyor speed down so the belt has time to remove the marks from the previous pass.
  3. Roller hardness. A 60-durometer contact roller is right for almost all wood sanding. A harder roller has less give and drives the belt deeper into the work – which is exactly what causes chatter.
