Open Coat vs. Closed Coat Abrasives

Quick answer: Open coat sandpaper has abrasive grain covering only 50–70% of the backing, so it resists loading and runs cooler – use it on softwood like pine and cedar, painted or finished surfaces, and soft metals like aluminum and brass. Closed coat has 90–95% grain coverage for a faster, more aggressive cut and a more uniform scratch pattern – use it on hardwood, steel and other hard materials where loading isn't a problem. Semi-open coat sits between the two.

What "coat" means

Coat describes how much of the backing is covered with abrasive grain, whatever that grain is – aluminum oxide, zirconia, ceramic or silicon carbide. Choosing the right coat matters because it decides how fast the belt cuts, how quickly it loads with dust, how hot it runs and how long it lasts.

Open coat

With grain on only 50–70% of the surface, dust and swarf have room to fall away instead of packing between the grains. That's why open coat abrasives stay sharp longer on materials that load – resinous softwoods like pine and cedar, paint, lacquer and fillers, and soft metals like zinc, brass and aluminum. The open spacing also lets air through, which keeps the belt cooler and prevents burning. Woodworkers generally want open-coat aluminum oxide; knife makers want ceramic.

Semi-open coat

A middle ground with about 30% less grain than closed coat. Choose it when open coat isn't cutting fast enough but closed coat would load.

Closed coat

With grain covering 90–95% of the backing, closed coat abrasives remove more stock per pass and leave a more uniform scratch pattern, because there are fewer gaps between the grains. That makes closed coat the choice for hardwood, steel, stainless and other hard materials that don't load the belt. Used on soft wood or soft metal, closed coat loads quickly, builds heat, and can burn the work.

Which should you order?

If the material is soft or gummy, or you're sanding a finish, go open coat. If the material is hard and you want speed and a consistent finish, go closed coat. Either way you get longer belt life and a better finish by matching the coat to the job – and if you're not sure, tell us what you're sanding and we'll recommend one.
