Scuff Pads and Sandpaper: When to Use Each

Quick answer: Use a scuff pad when you want to clean, dull or key a surface without cutting into it – scuffing paint before a new coat, knocking the gloss off a finish, cleaning rust or oxidation off metal, or blending a satin finish. Use sandpaper when you need to remove material – leveling, shaping, stripping, or working through a grit sequence to a finish. Scuff pads are non-woven nylon web loaded with abrasive grain; sandpaper is grain bonded to a backing. Many jobs use both: sandpaper to do the work, a scuff pad to finish it.

What a scuff pad is

A scuff pad is a surface conditioning abrasive: a synthetic non-woven web (usually nylon) with abrasive grain bonded throughout it. Because the web is open, it doesn't load up with debris and it runs cool, so it's very hard to overheat or burn a surface with one. Scuff pads work wet or dry, follow contours, and leave a fine, uniform satin scratch that new paint or clear coat grips well. They don't remove much material, which is exactly why you reach for them – they condition the surface rather than reshaping it.

Other non-woven products that do the same job

  • Flap discs – overlapping flaps of coated or non-woven abrasive on a backing plate. The overlap gives a faster finish and much longer life than a single pad, so you change discs less often.
  • Hand pads – the scuff pad in its basic form: no tool needed. Clean, de-rust, blend and polish by hand, dry or with water. They do what a wire brush does without the loose wires.
  • Quick change discs – 2" and 3" non-woven discs for a die grinder, for tight corners and small parts.
  • Surface conditioning belts – non-woven belts for belt grinders and backstand sanders. Start coarse and step down through medium and fine for a graining or satin finish on stainless.

What sandpaper is

Sandpaper is abrasive grain bonded in a layer onto a backing – paper, cloth or film – as sheets, discs, belts and rolls. It cuts, so it's for removing material: leveling drywall, stripping floors, shaping furniture parts, grinding welds, and working through grits to a finish. The four grains you'll meet are all synthetic:

Grit sizes

Grit tells you how coarse the paper is – the lower the number, the bigger the grain and the faster it cuts. 24–36 grit removes stock fast; 100 grit smooths edges and does prep work; 320–400 finishes and polishes. Pick the grain for the material and the grit for the stage.
