At 10" diameter the flaps are long enough that the wheel behaves almost like a soft belt: a wide, cushioned contact patch, very little heat and a long service life, but only on a machine that turns slowly enough for it. This 10" x 2" wheel is bought for slow-speed polishing lathes and flap wheel finishing machines in shops that process tanks, rail, wide tube and panels in volume and want fewer wheel changes than an 8".

Which arbor hole and which of the two grits should you choose?
The 10" x 2" is a two-grit wheel, and that keeps the decision simple.
- 60 grit: the working wheel. Blends weld toes on tanks, vessels and rail, removes scale, rust and handling marks from plate and wide tube, and takes out coarse grinder scratches before finishing. The long flaps make 60 grit surprisingly gentle; it cuts without gouging.
- 180 grit: the finishing wheel. A uniform satin on stainless and aluminum, the standard architectural brushed finish on rail and panel, and the surface most polishing shops want before going to a buff. Run it in one direction only.
If your process needs a step between 60 and 180, our 8" and 12" wheels carry 80 through 150 grit; many shops run 60 on the 10", 120 on an 8", then 180 on the 10" again. For grits above 180 on a wide face, see the 12" x 2" in 320 and 400.

What machines does a 10" x 2" unmounted flap wheel fit?
- Large polishing lathes and buffing motors with a 1" or 5/8" shaft, running at a speed within the rating on the wheel. A 10" flap wheel and a 10" buff on the same lathe is a standard satin-then-bright setup for rail and tank work.
- Flap wheel finishing machines and backstand spindles with 1-3/4" arbors, where wide wheels are common and two can be ganged for very wide sheet.
- Pedestal grinders and slow-speed finishing spindles with a 5/8" shaft, only if the guard clears a 10" x 2" wheel and the RPM is at or below the wheel rating.
Flange and arbor fit. A 10" x 2" wheel is heavy for a flap wheel. Use flanges of equal diameter that bear across the whole hub, seat the wheel square, tighten firmly, and spin it unloaded before use to check for vibration. Mount it so the flap tips trail the direction of rotation where the work touches. A loose or undersized fit at this diameter shows up immediately as shake and torn flaps.
Speed. The bigger the wheel, the slower it must turn. A 10" wheel is rated well below a 6" or 8", so most bench grinders are too fast for it. Compare the RPM printed on the wheel with the machine plate before mounting and never exceed it. If your only machine is a standard bench grinder, choose our 6" wheels instead.
How to get the most out of it
- Match RPM before anything else. Read the wheel rating and the machine plate. A 10" wheel on a machine built for 6" or 8" stones is usually overspeed.
- Mount with the flaps trailing between full-size flanges, and let it run unloaded for a moment to confirm it is smooth.
- Let the long flaps do the work. Bring the part in until the flaps just flex. The 10" wheel cushions more than any smaller size; pressing harder only heats the part and folds the flaps.
- Wide, overlapping passes. On tank shells and panels, feed the work across the 2" face and overlap each pass by about half. On rail and tube, run lengthwise and rotate the tube slowly.
- 60 first, then 180, same direction. Do all the blending at 60, clean the part, then make every 180 pass in the same direction for a satin that reads as one grain.
- Keep the two grits on separate spindles. A 10" x 2" wheel is slow to change and re-check; a two-end lathe with 60 on one side and 180 on the other is the productive setup.
- Clear loading with air. Aluminum and coated surfaces pack the flaps. Blow the wheel out and back off pressure.
- Store spares flat and dry. Long cloth flaps take a set if a wheel is left leaning on its face; store on the hub or in the box.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the 10" x 2" only offered in 60 and 180 grit?
Those are the two grits this diameter is bought for: 60 for blending and cleanup on tanks, rail and wide tube, and 180 for the finishing satin. Shops that need an intermediate step run 80 to 150 grit on our 8" or 12" wheels, and 320 and 400 are available on the 12" x 2". If you need another grit in 10", call us about a special order.
Can I put a 10" flap wheel on my bench grinder?
Almost never. A 10" wheel is rated for a much lower RPM than a 6" or 8" because the flap tips travel so much farther per revolution, and standard bench grinders run faster than that rating. It also will not fit most guards. Use it on a polishing lathe, buffing motor or flap wheel machine whose speed is at or below the figure printed on the wheel.
Which arbor hole do I need for a polishing lathe or flap wheel machine?
Measure the shaft or arbor where the wheel sits. Large polishing lathes and buffing motors are usually 1", flap wheel and backstand finishing machines are usually 1-3/4", and some pedestal spindles are 5/8". The hole must match exactly; a 10" x 2" wheel is heavy enough that any play shows as vibration and torn flaps.
How do I finish a stainless tank shell to a consistent satin with these wheels?
Blend welds and marks with the 60 grit wheel in overlapping passes across the 2" face, clean the shell, then run the 180 grit wheel with light pressure and every pass in the same direction. Keep the shell moving so the stainless never heat-tints, and use a fresh 180 wheel for the visible final pass. Follow with a buff and compound if a bright finish is specified.
Is a 10" wheel worth it over an 8" for production work?
If the machine can run it, yes. Longer flaps mean more abrasive per wheel, a cooler and softer cut and a wider contact patch, so fewer changes and a more even finish on large parts. The 8" is the better choice when you need the fuller grit range, a smaller guard, or a machine that runs faster than a 10" wheel allows.
Can two 10" x 2" wheels be ganged for wider sheet?
Yes, on a flap wheel machine or lathe arbor long enough to carry them between full-size flanges. Use the same grit on both, mount both with the flaps trailing, and clamp the pair as one unit. Expect a faint seam line at the join on the final pass; running the sheet at a slight angle across the face blends it.
