If a shop stocks one mounted flap wheel, it is usually this one. Two inches in diameter and one inch wide is big enough to blend a weld, deburr a plate edge or satin a length of tubing at a useful rate, and small enough to run in a drill, reach into a 2" bore or work the inside of a frame. The aluminum oxide cloth flaps handle steel, stainless, aluminum, brass, wood and plastic without changing wheels.
Each pack of 10 is one grit, 40 through 320, on a plain 1/4" shank or a 1/4-20 threaded shank. Maintenance departments, fabrication shops, farm and fleet shops, woodturners and serious home shops all buy the 2" x 1" as their everyday deburring and blending wheel.

Which shank style and which grits should a shop stock?
- Plain Shank: straight 1/4" steel shank. Fits any drill chuck, any die grinder with a 1/4" collet, and flex shaft handpieces. If you are not sure, this is the one.
- 1/4-20 Thread Shank: a 1/4-20 threaded stud in place of the plain shank, for mandrels, extension arbors and spindles with a 1/4-20 tapped hole. Choose it only if you already have or plan to use a threaded mandrel; it does not chuck in a collet.
A practical three-grit set for general work is 60, 120 and 240:
- 40 or 60 grit: rust, scale, paint, spatter, heavy burrs, rough castings. The 40 is for the worst of it; 60 is the everyday coarse wheel.
- 80 or 100 grit: blending weld toes, removing grinder marks, first pass on aluminum and brass.
- 120 grit: the general-purpose finishing grit under paint, and a good single grit for wood.
- 180 grit: pre-plating and pre-anodize matte, refined brushed finish.
- 240 or 320 grit: satin finishing stainless, brass and aluminum, pre-polish before compound, final sanding on turned wood.

What tools does a 2" x 1" mounted flap wheel fit?
- Electric and cordless drills with a standard chuck. The 2" diameter cuts properly at drill speeds, which is why this size is the maintenance and farm-shop favorite; the plain shank goes straight into the chuck.
- Straight die grinders, air or electric, with a 1/4" collet, for faster work on the bench.
- Right-angle die grinders with a 1/4" collet, for flat work and inside frames.
- Flex shaft handpieces with a 1/4" chuck or collet.
- Drill presses, with the work brought to the wheel, for repetitive deburring of small parts.
- 1/4-20 threaded mandrels and extension arbors, using the threaded shank version.
It will not fit an impact driver's hex chuck or an angle grinder's threaded spindle. Run within the RPM marked on the wheel or the tool's rating, whichever is lower; a fast die grinder can exceed the rating of a 2" wheel, a drill normally cannot.
How to get the most out of it
- Light pressure, always. The flaps only cut while they flex. Pushing harder stands them up, stops the cut, heats the part and tears cloth. If the wheel is not cutting, change to a coarser grit.
- Keep the flaps trailing. Move the tool so the flap tips drag across the work. If it grabs, hops or throws the part, reverse your direction.
- Keep it moving. Overlapping strokes, never a stationary wheel; a parked flap wheel digs a hollow in aluminum and wood in seconds.
- Use the whole face. Lay the 1" face flat to finish a surface; use the corner only deliberately, for edge-breaking, because it wears the wheel unevenly.
- Respect the speed rating. Stay within the RPM marked on the wheel or on the tool, whichever is lower.
- Run dry and clear with air. Paint, aluminum and resinous wood pack the flaps. Blow the wheel out and lighten up rather than pressing harder.
- Wear eye protection. Flap wheels throw grit and, when worn or overspeeded, pieces of cloth.

Frequently asked questions
If I only buy one size of mounted flap wheel, should it be the 2" x 1"?
For most shops, yes. The 2" x 1" is large enough to blend welds and deburr plate at a useful pace, small enough to run in a drill or enter a 2" bore, and its 1" face suits both surfaces and edges. Add a 1/2" wide wheel later for grooves and corners, and a 3" wheel if you finish large flat areas.
Will a 2" x 1" flap wheel fit a cordless impact driver?
No. Impact drivers take 1/4" hex bits, and these wheels have a round 1/4" shank, so it will not lock in. Use a drill with a chuck, a die grinder with a 1/4" collet or a flex shaft. Impact drivers also hammer rather than spin smoothly, which would shake flaps loose.
Which grit should I use on steel versus aluminum?
On steel start at 60 or 80 grit for deburring and blending and finish at 120 or 180. On aluminum start one grit coarser than you would expect, 60 or 80, because fine grits load quickly, then move to 120 and 240 with light pressure and clear the flaps with air. Both metals satin well at 240 to 320.
Is the 2" x 1" flap wheel good for sanding turned bowls?
Yes. Woodturners run it in a drill or flex shaft against the spinning or stationary bowl to remove tool marks and fair curves. Use 80 or 120 to remove tearout and 180 to 320 to finish. Keep the wheel moving and pressure light; a dwelling flap wheel dishes soft wood and burns dense species like maple.
Why did the flaps tear off my wheel?
Almost always pressure or speed. Pressing hard folds the flaps back until they tear at the hub; running above the RPM marked on the wheel does the same, especially on a fast air die grinder. Feeding into the flaps instead of trailing them can also catch an edge and rip a flap. Lighter touch, lower speed, trailing direction.
Plain shank or 1/4-20 thread shank for a drill?
Plain shank. A drill chuck grips the straight 1/4" steel shank directly. The 1/4-20 thread shank is a threaded stud meant to screw into a mandrel or extension arbor that has a tapped 1/4-20 hole; a chuck cannot grip threads securely. Choose threaded only when you already run that type of mandrel.
