Bandfiles and file belt sanders get into the places a grinder cannot: inside corners on a weld, the back of a bracket, exhaust tubing, the plunge line on a knife blank. A 1/2" x 18" belt is the standard size for the Milwaukee M12 FUEL bandfile, the Astro Pneumatic 3037 and the Dynabrade Dynafile II, and we convert ours in Anaheim, California, on Y-weight poly-cotton cloth with heat-treated grain so the narrow belt takes real pressure without stretching or shedding at the joint.
Pick Cloth A/O for aluminum, wood and fine grits, Zirconia for fast cutting on aluminum and steel through 120 grit, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) for stainless and other ferrous metals that run hot, and Ceramic for the longest life on hardened and stainless steel. Grits run 24 through 600 and every pack holds 24 belts.

Which 1/2" x 18" belt should you choose?
The grain decides how the belt behaves on a bandfile, where the contact arm is small and the pressure is concentrated. Not every grit is stocked in every grain; pick the material first and the grit menu shows what is available.
- Cloth A/O (aluminum oxide): the lowest-cost belt and the only one offered fine. Decent life and a reasonable cut on aluminum, brass, wood, plastics and mild steel, and the belt to reach for at 150 grit and finer on any metal. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry.
- Zirconia: the premium choice for aluminum and general steel. It cuts faster, runs cooler and lasts longer than aluminum oxide because the grain fractures and renews under pressure. Offered only in 24 through 120 grit; if you need finer than 120, switch to Cloth A/O. Y-weight poly-cotton, wet or dry.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): the same zirconia grain with a grinding aid worked into the resin bond and topically infused on the surface. That extra lubricant cools the part under heavy pressure, so it is the belt for stainless, steel and other ferrous metals that load or blue on a bandfile. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
- Ceramic (our #Shredder grain, orange-red in colour): the grain structure continuously renews its cutting edges, so it cuts faster and cooler than zirconia and lasts longer on hardened steel, stainless and tool steel. It costs more per belt and repays that on a part-for-part basis in a production shop. Needs firm pressure to work. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
A fabrication shop deburring stainless should stock Zirconia+ 60 and 80 and Ceramic 40 for weld knockdown. A shop working aluminum castings should stock Zirconia 60–120 and Cloth A/O 180–320 for finishing.

What tools take a 1/2" x 18" belt?
- Milwaukee 2482-20 M12 FUEL Bandfile: the cordless bandfile most fab and body shops carry; it runs a 1/2" x 18" belt.
- Astro Pneumatic 3037: 1/2" x 18" air belt sander for auto body and light fabrication.
- Dynabrade 40320 and 40352 Dynafile II: the industrial air file with contact arms from 1/4" up to 3/4" wide; the 1/2" arm takes this belt.
- Other electric and pneumatic file belt sanders specified for a 1/2" wide by 18" long belt.
Fit the belt over the drive wheel and contact arm with the tensioner released, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow and run it that way, then tension and let the tool track the belt centred before touching work. If your file sander takes a different width on the same 18" length, or a different length entirely, we make custom file belts to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Use the end of the contact arm for concave work and the flat of the arm for blending. The small radius at the arm tip is what gets into inside corners; the flat section gives a wider, cooler blend.
- Give zirconia and ceramic pressure; go light on aluminum oxide. Metal grains only stay sharp if they are loaded enough to fracture. Aluminum oxide just needs the tool's own pressure.
- Keep the tool moving. A 1/2" belt concentrates heat. Dwelling blues stainless, work-hardens the surface and glazes the belt in seconds.
- Slow down for aluminum, speed up for steel. On a variable-speed tool, run aluminum and brass slower and rub a grease stick on the running belt to stop loading; run steel and stainless faster.
- Run wet where the tool allows. Every grain here is on a wet-or-dry backing. Coolant on stainless and titanium extends belt life and keeps the part from discolouring.
- Step grits in order. 36 to 60 to 80 to 120, then Cloth A/O 180 to 320 for a finished blend. Skipping from 40 to 180 leaves a scratch the fine belt cannot remove.
- Change belts before they are dead. A worn narrow belt stretches, tracks off and slows the job; with 24 in the pack there is no reason to nurse one.

Frequently asked questions
Which 1/2" x 18" belt is best for stainless steel on a bandfile?
Zirconia+ with grinding aid for most stainless work, and ceramic for the longest life on heavy welds and hardened parts. The grinding aid on the Zirconia+ belt cools the part under the concentrated pressure of a bandfile arm, which is what keeps stainless from bluing. Use 40–60 for weld knockdown and 80–120 to blend.
Does a 1/2" x 18" belt fit the Milwaukee M12 bandfile?
Yes. The Milwaukee 2482-20 M12 FUEL bandfile runs a 1/2" x 18" belt, and so do the Astro Pneumatic 3037 air belt sander and the Dynabrade Dynafile II with a 1/2" contact arm. Any electric or air file sander specified for a 1/2" wide by 18" long belt will take these.
What is the best belt for sanding aluminum with a file sander?
Zirconia gives the fastest cut and longest life on aluminum in 24 through 120 grit, and cloth aluminum oxide is the cost-effective choice and the only option above 120. Run the tool slower on aluminum, use a grease stick on the belt to stop loading, and finish with cloth A/O 180–320.
Why is zirconia only offered up to 120 grit?
Zirconia grain needs pressure to fracture and expose new cutting edges, and that mechanism stops working at fine grit sizes; above 120 it dulls like an expensive aluminum oxide belt. For 150 through 600 grit on a 1/2" x 18" belt, choose cloth aluminum oxide, which is offered through the full fine range.
What does the grinding aid on the Zirconia+ belt do?
The grinding aid is a lubricating compound built into the resin bond and infused on the belt surface. As the belt runs, it lowers friction and heat at the contact point, so stainless, steel and other ferrous metals cut cooler, load less and the belt lasts longer than plain zirconia under the same pressure.
Can I run these belts wet?
Yes. All four grains are made on poly-cotton or polyester Y-weight backings that can be run wet or dry. Coolant or water helps most on stainless and titanium, where it keeps the part from discolouring and extends belt life. Most bandfile users run dry; dry running is fine as long as you keep the tool moving.
