44" x 60" Sanding Belt, 2 PACK
44" x 60" Sanding Belt, 2 PACK
Available in stock (49991)
A 44-inch belt only 60 inches long belongs to a compact class of wide belt sander, and the Cantek C431 is the machine our original listing named for it. Short-loop machines like that run hot and hard because there is less belt to shed heat, so backing and coat matter more than usual. These 44" x 60" belts are closed-coat aluminum oxide on poly-cotton cloth, joined to run in either direction.
Aluminum oxide is the only grain we stock in this size, in 36 through 320 grit, two belts to a pack. That covers calibrating, surfacing and finishing on hardwood, plywood, MDF and veneer, plus aluminum and composites on machines set up for them. Zirconia or other lengths can be quoted as custom belts. Converted in Anaheim, California.
- Closed-coat aluminum oxide: full grain coverage for the fastest cut and longest life on hardwood and panels
- Poly-cotton cloth backing that handles the heat of a short 60-inch loop
- Bi-directional joint; mount it either way with no arrow to honour
- 36 through 320 grit in one listing: calibrating to sealer flatting
- Two belts per pack; the second belt is your spare for the grit on the machine
- Converted in Anaheim, California; other grains and lengths quoted as custom belts
Why closed-coat aluminum oxide, and when would you want something else?
This size is stocked in one material, so the choice is which grit rather than which grain.
- A/O - Aluminum Oxide, closed coat on poly-cotton cloth. Closed coat means the grain covers the whole backing, which gives more cutting points per square inch, a faster cut and longer life on hardwood, plywood, MDF and veneer than open coat. It is the right grain for every wood pass from calibrating at 36 grit to the 220 pass before stain, and it handles aluminum, brass and composite sheet on machines set up for metal. Above 120 grit it is the grain we would recommend regardless of what else was on the shelf.
Our original page put the open-coat question simply: are you sanding a very soft, pitchy softwood? Almost always no, in which case closed coat cuts faster, lasts longer and is the only choice for metal. If you calibrate dense hardwood or steel all day and want zirconia, we can convert it in this size as a custom belt; it is not a stocked option in 44" x 60".
Grit guide for a short-loop 44-inch sander
| Grit | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 36 | Calibrating rough or glued-up stock | 1/64" passes; keep the feed up |
| 60 | Thicknessing, levelling joints | Removes the 36 scratch |
| 80–100 | General surfacing | Typical first belt on planed stock |
| 120–150 | Pre-finish on hardwood, plywood, MDF | Platen if fitted |
| 180–220 | Final pass before stain or clear coat | Stop at 220 for stain |
| 320 | Sealer and primer flatting | Skim passes, light pressure |
Step no more than one grade at a time. This size skips 40 grit, so go 36 to 60, and skips 400, so 320 is the finest flatting pass available.
What machines take a 44" x 60" belt?
- Cantek C431: the wide belt sander our original listing named for this size. Confirm against your plate before ordering.
- Other compact 44-inch wide belt sanders with a short frame whose plate reads 44" x 60".
- Automatic finish sanders built around a 44 x 60 loop, including machines set up for aluminum or composites with a suitable collector.
Match both numbers. We also stock 43" x 60" and 44" x 75" belts, and neither substitutes for this one: an inch of width overhangs or under-covers the drum and misses the tracking sensor, and most machines accept only about a quarter inch of length variation. These belts run bi-directionally; inspect the joint tape before mounting. Other 44-inch lengths are converted as custom belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Track empty and re-check warm. A 60-inch loop responds fast to tracking changes and heats quickly; centre the oscillation before feeding stock and look again after a few minutes.
- Take lighter passes than you would on a long-bed machine. 1/64" at 36–60 grit on hardwood, less at finer grits. A short loop has less cloth to carry heat away between passes over the drum.
- Keep the feed up. Slow feed and dwell burn maple and cherry and glaze MDF; raise feed speed before dropping to a coarser grit.
- Run strong extraction. Loading is the main reason a belt stops cutting, and a hot short loop loads faster. Clean the belt with a crepe rubber eraser at light pressure as soon as the surface starts to shine.
- Rotate the pair. With two belts per pack, alternate them on long runs so each gets time to cool and neither loads solid.
- Store belts hanging, dry and out of sunlight, and let a cold belt reach shop temperature before mounting.

Use it for / don't use it for
Use it for
- Cabinet doors, panels and drawer parts on a compact 44-inch sander
- Hardwood glue-ups, plywood, MDF and veneered panels
- Sealer and primer flatting at 320 with a light skim pass
- Aluminum, brass and composite sheet on a machine set up for metal, with a grease stick on aluminum
Don't use it for
- Machines plated for 43" x 60", 44" x 75" or any other size
- Heavy steel grinding; aluminum oxide is not the grain for it, and zirconia is a custom order in this size
- Wet sanding on a machine not designed for it
- One collector shared between wood dust and metal dust

Frequently asked questions
Does a 44" x 60" belt fit the Cantek C431?
The Cantek C431 is the machine our original listing named for the 44" x 60" size. Confirm the size plate or manual on your machine before ordering, since belt lengths vary between models. If your plate shows a different length or width, we convert custom belts to match in about 3 days.
Why is there no zirconia option in 44" x 60"?
This size is stocked in closed-coat aluminum oxide only, which covers wood, panel products, aluminum and composites well. Shops that calibrate dense hardwood or steel and want zirconia can have it converted as a custom 44" x 60" belt; call 714-646-3299 or email sales@maverickabrasives.com for a quote.
Is a 44" x 60" belt interchangeable with 43" x 60"?
No. An inch of width matters on a wide belt sander because the belt has to cover the drum and pass the tracking sensors at both edges. A 44-inch belt overhangs a 43-inch drum; a 43-inch belt leaves a 44-inch drum uncovered. We stock both as separate listings, so order the width on your machine plate.
Which grits should I keep on hand for cabinet doors?
For planed hardwood and plywood doors, 80 and 120 grit take out knife marks and prepare for finish, with 180 as the last pass before stain. Add 36 or 60 if you calibrate glued-up panels, and 320 if you flat sealer on the machine. Keep each step within one grade of the last.
Why does a short 60-inch belt burn more easily than a longer one?
A 60-inch loop passes over the drum far more often per minute than a 103-inch or longer belt, so each section of cloth has less time to cool and shed dust between cuts. Take lighter passes, keep the conveyor moving, run strong extraction, and clean the belt with a crepe eraser before it glazes.
How many belts come in a pack and can I mix grits?
Each pack holds two 44" x 60" belts of one grit; grits are not mixed within a pack. Orders over $200 ship free, unused belts in original packaging can be returned within 30 days, and case pricing or standing orders can be arranged by calling 714-646-3299 or emailing sales@maverickabrasives.com.
