53" x 85" Sanding Belt, 3 PACK

The SCM DMC SD60 is the machine this belt is typically bought for, as our original listing noted, and like most European wide belt sanders it is built around a 1350 mm drum. That works out to a 53-inch belt, not 54, and these 53" x 85" belts on X-weight poly-cotton cloth are cut to that width so they clear the tracking sensors and drum ends properly.

Three belts to a pack, one grain and one grit per pack, from 36 through 400 grit. Closed-coat aluminum oxide handles surfacing and finishing on solid wood and panel products; zirconia takes the calibrating pass on hardwood and glue-ups. We convert them in Anaheim, California, and cut other 1350 mm lengths to order.

Which grain should you run on an SCM DMC SD60 or similar 1350 mm sander?

Both grains come in every grit from 36 to 400. A single-head machine changes belts between passes, so most shops keep zirconia for the first pass and aluminum oxide for everything after it.

• Cloth Closed Coat A/O: aluminum oxide on X-weight cloth with the grain covering the whole backing. It gives the flattest, most even scratch on beech, oak, maple, cherry and walnut, on MDF and on veneered panels, and it is the grain to run from 80 grit through the final 180–220 pass before stain or lacquer. It also handles aluminum, brass and composites. Closed coat carries more grain than open coat and lasts longer on hardwood; open coat only earns a place on very soft, pitchy softwood.
• Zirconia: the calibrating grain at 36, 40, 60 or 80 grit. Its crystals fracture under load and keep presenting sharp edges, so a head set for a real depth of cut on dense hardwood or glued-up panels holds its removal rate through the shift. It needs that load; at light finishing pressure it glazes. Switch to aluminum oxide above 120.

On metal, closed coat is always the right choice: aluminum oxide for aluminum and brass sheet, zirconia for mild steel plate, with a dedicated metal-rated collector.

Grit guide for solid wood and panels on a single-head machine

A common three-belt set is 80, 120 and 180 for stain-grade panels, or 60, 100 and 150 for glued-up hardwood. Step no more than one grade at a time.

What machines take a 53" x 85" belt?

• 1350 mm calibrating sanders running ahead of a separate finishing machine, and machines set up for aluminum or steel sheet with a metal-rated collector.

Width is the number that catches people out. A 54-inch belt overhangs a 1350 mm drum on both edges and may not trip the tracking sensor, so do not substitute our 54" x 85" belt for this one. Length tolerance on most sanders is about a quarter inch. Our belts run bi-directionally; inspect the joint tape before mounting. Other 1350 mm lengths are converted as custom belts in about 3 days.

How to get the most out of it

1. Order from the plate, not the catalogue. If the machine plate reads 1350 mm, you need 53 inches. Measure an old belt flat if the plate is unreadable.
2. Track empty first. Let the belt settle with the oscillation centred before feeding stock, and re-check after it warms.
3. Calibrate in light passes. 1/32" (about 0.8 mm) or less at 36–60 grit on hardwood, half that at 80–100, a skim at 120 and finer.
4. Keep the feed up. Slow feed and dwell burn beech, maple and cherry and glaze MDF. Raise feed speed before reaching for a coarser grit.
5. Run every piece through one grit before changing belts. Three belts in a pack means the next grit is on the shelf.
6. Extract hard and clean the belt. A crepe rubber eraser at light pressure clears loaded aluminum oxide; loading is what ends most wide belts.
7. Store belts hanging, dry and out of sunlight, and let a cold belt reach shop temperature before mounting.
