Which grit stage should you use on an EZ-8 floor sander?

24–36 GRIT

Initial cut

How do the four EZ-8 abrasive families differ?

Each grain has a different live grit range. The most expensive option is not automatically the right one for every pass.

Engineered-floor caution: Confirm the flooring manufacturer permits sanding and verify wear-layer thickness before starting. A coarse pass can quickly cut through thin veneer.

WOOD-FLOOR REFINISHING WORKFLOW

How should the big machine, edger, and grit sequence work together?

A good result depends on removing the previous scratch pattern across the field, perimeter, and detail areas—not simply reaching the finest grit in the selector.

STARTING GRIT

Let the existing floor determine the first cut

Use the least aggressive grit that will remove the coating, flatten the required defects, and expose a uniform surface. A badly uneven solid floor may need a different starting cut than a flat floor with a worn finish.

FIELD + EDGES

Coordinate the scratch pattern

Sand edges and places the EZ-8 cannot reach with the appropriate edger or detail method. The final edge work should be compatible with the final field scratch so the perimeter does not finish differently.

BETWEEN CUTS

Vacuum, inspect, and mark defects

Remove dust between passes and inspect in good light. Remaining finish, low areas, cross-grain scratches, drum marks, and edger scratches are easier to correct before moving to a finer grit.

FINAL GRIT

Match the stain and finish schedule

The finest available belt is not automatically the correct stopping point. Wood species, stain color, sealer, and finish system can require a particular final scratch; follow the coating and flooring instructions.

Machine fit: American Sanders specifies an 8-inch × 19-inch expandable belt for the EZ-8 expandable-drum model. Check the model plate and manual because clamp-drum and other machine designs use different abrasive mounting systems.

COMMON FLOOR-SANDING QUESTIONS

What causes visible sanding marks or uneven finish?

STOP MARKS

The drum remained engaged without movement

Keep the machine moving whenever the drum contacts the floor and feather into and out of the pass according to the EZ-8 operating instructions.

COARSE SCRATCHES

The prior pattern was not fully removed

Do not advance just because one pass is complete. Continue or add the needed intermediate grit until the preceding scratch is removed uniformly.

EDGE MISMATCH

The perimeter and field ended differently

Coordinate the edger, detail sanding, and big-machine progression so the final scratch is consistent before stain or finish is applied.

EARLY LOADING

Finish, resin, heat, or dust is filling the belt

Stop and correct the process when the belt glazes, loads, tears, or stops cutting uniformly. Do not compensate for a dull belt by dwelling or forcing the drum.

Wood-dust safety: Follow the machine manual for ventilation and dust collection. Set exposed fasteners before sanding, empty collected sanding dust frequently, and store or dispose of it exactly as the equipment and site-safety instructions require.

HOW TO USE IT

Sand the floor in controlled, complete passes

Follow the EZ-8 manual, flooring-manufacturer guidance, dust-control requirements, and finish-system instructions.

Will these belts fit a Clarke EZ-8?

They are 8-inch × 19-inch expandable belts for compatible Clarke/American Sanders EZ-8 expandable-drum machines. Do not order them for an EZ-8 clamp-drum abrasive system; verify the model plate, drum type, and exact abrasive size in the machine manual.

Which abrasive material should I choose?

Aluminum oxide is the broadest general-purpose range. Zirconia and ceramic are offered for coarse removal. Silicon carbide extends into the finest listed grits and is used where a sharper, refined scratch is needed. Match the material to the floor and process.

Can these be used on engineered flooring?

Only if the manufacturer permits sanding and the wear layer is thick enough. Confirm the wear-layer thickness and use a conservative starting grit to avoid sanding through the veneer.

What is the recommended floor-sanding sequence?

The original guide uses 24–36 for the initial cut, 40–60 for intermediate sanding, 80–100 for pre-finish smoothing, and 120 for fine refinement. Avoid large grit jumps, confirm that each pass removes the prior scratch, and let the floor and finish system determine the final grit.

Are all grits available in all four materials?

No. Each material has its own live grit range. The selector only enables material-and-grit combinations that are sold.

How many EZ-8 sanding belts do I need to refinish a floor?

There is no reliable belt-per-square-foot number because finish type, floor condition, wood species, starting grit, machine setup, and loading all change consumption. Each variant is a 10-pack of one grit, so plan the full grit sequence and replace a belt when it is loaded, damaged, or no longer cutting uniformly.
